MERCER BOTANIC GARDENS
MERCER BOTANIC GARDENS

NATURAL. Lots of nature & flowers. A very traditional environment for soft, pretty photos. I love shooting here!

MONTROSE
MONTROSE

ARTSY/EDGY. This is an area that gives you a lot of freedom for backdrops! There’s a lot of painted murals for colorful, vibrant pictures! It’s a lot of walking, but I definitely enjoy the vivid, eye-catching photos that come from shooting in this area!

HOUSTON MUSEUM OF NATURAL SCIENCE BUTTERFLY CENTER
HOUSTON MUSEUM OF NATURAL SCIENCE BUTTERFLY CENTER

WHIMSICAL/NATURAL. I love the way photos come out at this location! They look so dreamy & fairy-like. If you’re lucky, sometimes the butterflies are feeling the spotlight and photobomb your shoot. The only drawbacks are one, that they keep it very warm for the butterflies, and you definitely feel that humidity. So that is something to consider because it could interfere with your hairstyle and make you sweaty if you’re in there for a long time. Additionally, there is a $12 ticket per adult.

RIVER OAKS DISTRICT
RIVER OAKS DISTRICT

URBAN. Very nice & cute shopping area. It definitely looks like a shopping area, but the lights are pretty! Rice Village is a artsier, less “boujee“ option too!

GLASSELL SCHOOL OF ART
GLASSELL SCHOOL OF ART

NATURAL/ARTSY/COOL. There’s some very beautiful fountains outside (though they’re not always on), a roof garden, & inside if it’s open, they have cool concrete steps that make for some very editorial-inspired shots. This is a great place if you’re only doing one location because it’s super versatile!

SIG’S LAGOON/CACTUS RECORDS

EDGY/ARTSY. If you’re a music lover, these are great locations! It can be a little awkward shooting if there’s a lot of other people shopping, so keep that in mind if posing for pictures makes you feel shy!

GERALD D. HINES WATERFALL PARK
GERALD D. HINES WATERFALL PARK

URBAN. A classic Houston backdrop. You’ve probably seen a bunch of photos here. I’ve driven by it a million times, and yet, if it’s a Houston photographer rite of passage to shoot here…then I’m definitely behind. This isn’t a place I’ve shot before because it’s typically packed with a bunch of other groups posing for their quince, engagement, or grad photos, but hey, I’m willing to bump some elbows for you. Not my photo.

SMITHER PARK
SMITHER PARK

ARTSY/GRUNGY. Creative green space. Lots of mosaic art sculptures & walls, so really interesting backdrops! Not my photo.

KEMAH BOARDWALK
KEMAH BOARDWALK

PLAYFUL. Fun, carnival feel with water views. Funnel cake access. First sentence was more for you, while the second sentence was more for me. Not my photo.

BUFFALO BAYOU PARK
BUFFALO BAYOU PARK

NATURAL. Another popular Houston location for photos. City views. Lots of green stretches & not as heavy on the trees, so there’d be a lot of focus on your posing and less reliance on the background to pull inspiration from. Hermann park is also a nice park in Houston. Not my photo.

HOUSTON MUSEUM OF FINE ART
HOUSTON MUSEUM OF FINE ART

Really any of the museums in Houston! Natural Science, Contemporary Art Museum (free entry always)… The museums have free admission on Thursdays until 9PM, I believe. The drawback of the museums is that although it is okay to photograph here, it can feel a bit awkward to do so in front of the security.

THE RICE BOX.
THE RICE BOX.

COOL. The Rice Box is a Chinese-American takeout restaurant with pretty neon signs. It’s pretty small, but would make for some edgier pictures. If you like the lights, but would prefer warmer lighting, there’s a Velvet Taco on Westheimer with warm, redder-toned lights and cute, pink & white bar seats. Not my photo.

DISCOVERY GREEN
DISCOVERY GREEN

URBAN/ARTSY/NATURAL. Another versatile location! An urban green space with trees and art installations! Not my photo.
